Heated Sample Line

Heated Sample Line Specifications

Clayborn Lab has developed machinery and processes that easily accommodate spooled tubing and/or tubing that can be easily bent for packaging and shipping. Straight length rigid tube heating is a possibility, but is usually limited to 20’ in length and requires special shipping arrangements. All lengths may incur a surcharge based on the outer diameter size.

Sizes and types of Tubing

  • 1/4” O.D. to 1 3/4” O.D. machine wrapped to 200+ ft. length
  • <1/4” O.D. and >1 3/4” O.D. hand wrapped to 100+ ft. length
  • Nylon, Teflon, Aluminum, Stainless Steel, Copper
  • Tubing can be customer supplied
  • Multi-tube

Wattage

  • Wattage limited only by maximum operating temperature and available amperage. Engineered based on O.D., length, voltage, and desired operating temperature in specified ambient environment.

Controls

  • Embedded thermostat, thermocouple, RTD’s and variac (variable power supply)
  • End-to-end embedded TC and power wires

Insulation

  • 1/4” Nomex standard
  • Additional Nomex for colder environments
  • High Performance Aerogel
  • Closed / open cell foam
  • Customer specified

Abrasion Resistance options

  • Clear heat shrink jacket, Polyolefin, or Teflon depending on operating temperature
  • Nylon braided jacket over insulation (black color standard)
  • Extruded continuous silicone scuff coat tubing with inner braided substrate (gray color standard)
  • NEW! TUFF-GUARD – A lightweight, corrugated outer sheathing that provides crush and kink-proof protection.

Electrical Terminals

  • MILSPEC Teflon coated lead wire (red color standard)
  • NEMA & Specialty plugs

Heat Traced Tubing

Clayborn Lab can heat trace any suitable material to operate as high as 500ºF (~225ºC). Clayborn Lab welcomes custom (one-off) applications and will work closely with the customer to meet desired specifications.

Tubing Sizes

Machine Wrapped: 1/4” - 1 3/4” O.D.

Hand-wrapped: (Please call – incurs surcharge) Smallest: 1/8” O.D. Largest: Usually 4” O.D.

  • Teflon: Examples include FEP, PTFE, PFA
  • Stainless Steel: Examples include Type 304 or 316, welded or smooth-bore
  • Stainless Steel braided Teflon: Inner PTFE Teflon core with Stainless Steel braided outer
  • Stainless Steel Convoluted: Stainless Steel convoluted tubing inside Stainless Steel braid
  • Thermoplastic Low & High Pressure Tubing
  • Copper
  • Aluminum
  • Customer Supplied: Clayborn Lab encourages unique projects and will heat trace any suitable tubing material. Examples include high purity, medical, and food grade tubing.

Heated Sample Line Finishes (Grades)

  • Heat Trace Only: The most simple offering. Heat tape is wrapped around tubing. Heat tape is electrically terminated and ready to heat, with accessories/options requested by customer already installed (Plug or lead wires, thermostats and/or thermocouples or other temperature controls). Customer will be responsible for protecting tube/tape and user by providing thermal insulation and possibly a moisture barrier, depending on environment.) Recommended for lab use as is or built-up by customer for use in other environments.
  • Heat Trace With Heat Shrink: Same as above, with the addition of a clear heat shrink material over the length of the heated section of the tubing. Polyolefin heat shrink is standard and it is rated to 275ºF (~135ºC). If higher temperatures are required, Teflon shrink must be used, which incurs a substitute material surcharge. Either heat shrink provides no thermal insulating qualities, but does offer increased protection from moisture and/or contaminants. Recommended for indoor use.
  • Heavy Duty: Heated Sample Line is heat traced and covered with one or more layers of 1/4” Nomex felt insulation (multiple layers of insulation will increase cost). The insulation is then held in place with Nylon braid. End of heated section sealed using black heat shrink tubing. Recommended for indoor use in varying temperature environments or where a large rise in temperature is desired.
  • Industrial Strength: The most robust offering. Same as the heavy duty finish with the addition of what we call Scuff coat. Scuff coat can be described as looking similar to a plastic fire hose and provides excellent resistance to moisture and/or exterior contaminants, as well as slightly increasing the thermal insulating qualities (Scuff coat is basically extruded silicone over fiberglass braid). Recommended for outdoor use or where extreme rise in temperature is desired.
  • Tuff Guard: This high strength, extremely durable exterior cover offers superior heated sample line protection with one third less weight, setting a new standard in the marketplace. Tuff Guard is resistant to alcohol, grease, minerals oils, diesel oil, petrol and is self-extinguishing. The flexible nature of Tuff Guard’s corrugated construction allows it to be easily coiled and stored. Produced within ISO 9001 guidelines, Tuff Guard can also be fitted with an extra layer of high-temperature protection when testing inside smokestacks. Tuff Guard abrasion resistance means long lasting durability in the field, and its lighter weight means ease of use for the operator.
  • Tuff Guard Extreme: This is Clayborn's most robust finish. Looks and feels very similar to standard Tuff Guard, however uses a polyamide 12 rather than polyamide 6. This allows greater resistance to higher temperatures, lower temperatures, as well as very dynamic applications like robotics.

Heated Sample Line Configurations

  • Single Line: Single tubing line heat traced and finished according to customer specifications.
  • Tube-In-A-Tube (Umbilical): Smaller O.D. tubing is inserted into larger O.D. tubing for repeated use and replacement in field (I.e.: 1/8” insert tubing inside 1/4” heated line. 1/8” tubing can be removed if tubing becomes contaminated) For sizing purposes, smaller tube should just be able to easily slide into larger tube.
  • Heated Line + Calibration Line(s): Single heated tubing line with the addition of one or more calibration (unheated) tubing lines. Two layers of Nomex insulation & Heavy Duty or Industrial Strength Heated Sample Line finish required.
  • Multiple Heated Lines and/or Calibration Lines: Multiple heated tubing lines with the addition of one or multiple calibration (unheated) tubing lines. Two layers of Nomex insulation and Heavy Duty or Industrial Strength Heated Sample Line finish required.
